A Year of Impact and Progress
The Gombe Community Development Association (GCDA) is proud to present its 2023 Annual Report, highlighting our continued commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Gombe State. This year, we worked across multiple programs, from combating drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) to expanding family planning services and improving neonatal health outcomes.
Fighting Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in the Community
Under the Community Programmatic Management of Drug Resistant TB (CPMDT) initiative, implemented in partnership with the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH), GCDA brought high-quality, patient-centered TB diagnosis and treatment closer to the people.
Key Achievements in 2023:
- 117 patients diagnosed with DR-TB
- 68 patients cured and 11 completed treatment
- Home visits and community sensitization campaigns conducted
- Overcoming challenges such as fuel subsidy removal and cash scarcity through innovative transport and drug distribution solutions
Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) – Saving Newborn Lives
Through support from the Child Health Fund (CHF), our HBB program trained healthcare providers in lifesaving neonatal resuscitation techniques.
October – December 2023 Impact:
- 15 healthcare providers trained directly
- 40 providers reached via stepdown training
- 475 deliveries conducted by trained providers
- 41 newborns resuscitated with HBB kits
Scaling Up Family Planning with CODSAiN
The Community-Oriented DMPA-SC/Self-Injection Acceleration in Nigeria (CODSAiN) project, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, expanded family planning access in all LGAs of Gombe State.
Highlights:
- 1,054 family planning providers trained
- Distributed 15,000 units of DMPA-SC/SI and 25,000 HCG strips
- Improved data quality and integrated monitoring with LGA M&E officers
- Increased community demand generation through outreach and CHIPS agents
Challenges and Our Response
In 2023, GCDA navigated several obstacles:
- Cashless policy & transport costs: Partnered with car hire services accepting bank transfers and provided longer-term drug supplies to patients in remote areas.
- Data collection & logistics: Updated tools like KoboCollect and improved use of commodity registers during outreach.
- Activity scheduling conflicts: Coordinated closely with state and local actors to align priorities.

As we move into 2024, GCDA remains committed to:
- Strengthening community-based healthcare delivery
- Expanding access to lifesaving interventions
- Building sustainable systems for better health outcomes in Gombe State
